About the Author
Garrett Brooks is a writer, artist, life coach, and advocate whose life and work are grounded in resilience, honesty, and transformative healing. A survivor of childhood trauma, domestic violence, and incarceration, Garrett writes with fearless vulnerability, using poetry to unpack themes of identity, injustice, mental health, and the human need for connection and dignity.
Based in Townsville, Queensland, they are currently studying a Bachelor of Communication & Creative Industries, majoring in English Literature, at the University of Southern Queensland. Their academic journey complements their lived experience, equipping them to amplify silenced voices and challenge the narratives that marginalize vulnerable communities.
Garrett is the founder and director of Onwards and Upwards NQ, a community-led initiative supporting individuals and families impacted by incarceration. Through peer-driven support groups, practical assistance, and educational resources, they help others reclaim their stories and rebuild their lives with pride and purpose.
Their poetry collection, Learning Through Living, is a raw and heartfelt reflection of their life—a journey through trauma, love, self-discovery, and redemption. The revised 2025 edition is dedicated to their children, Elders, and community, with deep respect for their adoptive Lardil family and the guidance of First Nations wisdom.
In addition to their literary and community advocacy work, Garrett brings more than a decade of professional experience in customer service, leadership, and training. Whether as a cleaning supervisor or small business owner, they lead with empathy, resilience, and a commitment to lifting others up.
Garrett invites every reader to journey alongside them—to witness pain transformed into power, and to believe in the healing that comes through truth, connection, and creative expression.
